Why do founders need coaching?

There is a distinct lack of data to evidence the effectiveness of leadership coaching as a learning and development tool outside of large corporates.

Arguably, leaders of early-stage businesses are the most in need of a tailored and easily accessible development resource to support them in honing leadership and people management skills on the job and usually very quickly as the business grows.

This, in addition to entrepreneurs multi-tasking to fundraise, learn new skills daily, manage investor relations, business develop and manage operations / firefight. The struggle is real!

I stumbled across a journal outlining a recent (2020) survey of 100 early-stage owners and advisers, the findings of which are that regular coaching will be the most widely used leadership and development tool for early-stage businesses over the next 5-10 years.

The study also concluded that coaching is most effective where the coach possesses a strong knowledge of the industry and has a good rapport with the entrepreneur.

A focused coaching programme to support times of change, rapid growth or key milestones such as raising funds and embedding new investors can be an effective tool in supporting entrepreneurs through what can be a bumpy and unpredictable journey.
